image

Hou Yifan, a 16-year-old chess player from China, became the youngest chess champion on Friday when she defeated another Chinese player, Ruan Lufei, in the mail biting final of Women’s World Chess Championship , which was held in Antakya, Turkey.

She broke the record of Maia Chiburdanidze who had previously held the record for youngest champion at 17.

The record among men is held by Garry Kasparov, when he was 22.

In interview Hou Yifan said that she receives training and financial support from the Chinese government, studies chess four to five hours a day and also attends high school. She said that she sometimes falls behind in her work, but her teachers understand and try to help her out. She said, “The teachers will use their free time to teach me.”

Good to know a world champion was here in KL recently….
